The sodium or potassium salt of palmitic acid can be used as an emulsifier in emulsion polymerization. The sodium salt of palmitic acid is one of the main components of soap, while its aluminum and zinc salts are used in lubricants, coatings, inks, and plasticizers. Industrially, palmitic acid is produced by saponification and neutralization of animal and vegetable fats such as tallow, lard, and palm oil.
